The Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology of Leeds Beckett University invites you to its Annual Research Student Symposium on the theme of ‘Design and Creativity’, which will take place on Friday 30th January 2015.
DESIGN AND CREATIVITY
In his etymological essay on “design” Vilem Flusser observes that the current use of the term ‘indicates just about any situation in which art and technique (including evaluative and scientific thought) combine forces to smooth the way to a new culture’. Design is thus opened up in a wider sense that bridges across art, science and technology. Echoing the words of Flusser’s essay the Design and Creativity research student symposium will aim ‘to bring to light the crafty and insidious aspects of the word “design”’ within the diverse disciplines that operate within the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology.
AET research students are invited to critically address the theme of ‘Design and Creativity’ within the context of its current debate and topical role across the faculty disciplines at large. The purpose of the symposium is to offer a window on student research in the Faculty across the different cultures of the arts, humanities, science and technology, and to provoke interdisciplinary conversations on a topical theme we all address, in different ways, in our work.
THEMES
We encourage proposals on topics that address the overall theme of ‘design and creativity’ across disciplines, including:
3D and 4D design / architectural history and theory / architectural media and representation /architecture / artificial creativity / co-design and service design / collaborative design approaches / creativity and computing systems (creative technology, computer games, digital story telling, computer music systems) / critical cartographies and mapmaking / definitions and applications of ‘creativity’ and ‘creative thinking’ / design and public culture (monuments, public art, flagship projects) / design communication design in the development of innovative technology (networking, sustainability, intelligent systems, cloud computing) / design of creative milieux and creative cities / design of intelligent systems (robotics, decision making systems, expert systems) / design processes / digital design tools / drawing in architecture / fashion / film and animation / graphics/ history of design / human-centred design in information systems / information management (big data management, business intelligence, digital and technology-enhanced learning) / interactive performance / interior architecture / landscape design and architecture/ media art/ performance / product design /representations of the city / resistance to ‘official’ design (design activism, guerrilla gardening, etc.) / social informatics (social networking, privacy and surveillance, conflict resolution) / social media / translation and transcultural studies / urban paradigms / urbanism/ visual arts.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Professor Marco De Michelis — Visiting Professor of Architecture at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, Professor of History of Architecture at the Institute of Architecture of the University of Venice (IUAV) and at the Bocconi University in Milan.
