Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021

Nomination of sub-panel members: Panel 13 - Architecture, Built Environment and Planning

The process for the nomination of REF 2021 sub-panel members was published in October 2017. The first stage involves the selection of sub-panel members for the criteria-setting phase during 2018. In 2020 there will be a further call for additional sub-panel members and assessors - anyone nominated but not appointed for the first stage will still be eligible to be included.  As one of the officially designated 'nominating bodies' the AHRA has an important  role in submitting names for consideration. We therefore welcome applications from UK-based academics in architectural humanities, to be submitted to AHRA by 12:00 on 8th December 2017.

Applicants should complete the template below, either as a Word document or in an email, which includes the information requested in the official REF online nomination form. The REF sub-committee of the AHRA Steering Group, whose members were selected with appropriate consideration of diversity issues, will draw up the final list of candidates to be submitted as AHRA nominees by the REF deadline of midday 20 December. In making these decisions, the AHRA will seek an appropriate breadth of research expertise from across the discipline, and will be especially mindful of the REF guidelines on Equality and Diversity, as stated in Annex C of the guidance document Roles and Recruitment of the Expert Panels (REF 2017/03 October 2017):

“The funding bodies are seeking nominations of candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds, institution types and geographical regions. We particularly welcome nominations of candidates from groups previously under-represented on assessment panels, including women, people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, and disabled people.”

Jonathan Hale (Chair - AHRA REF sub-committee)

REF 2014

As in the run-up to the RAE in 2008, AHRA has continued to campaign for strong representation for architectural humanities research within the restructured assessment panel for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning (C16). As one of HEFCE's officially designated 'Nominating Bodies' AHRA made a number of recommendations for membership of the panel.

Details are available on the HEFCE website here:

Research Assessment Exercise 2008

Historically, research in AHRA's core areas of interest - architectural history, theory, culture, design and urbanism - was significantly under-represented within the Research Assessment Exercise. As this process impacts on the allocation of substantial resources from the Higher Education Funding Councils in the UK, university researchers in architectural humanities have been disadvantaged in the distribution of research funding.

AHRA campaigned for better representation in the build-up to RAE 2008. Following our response to the consultation on the Roberts Report in September 2003, AHRA was included on HEFCE's official list of nominating bodies for membership of the new RAE assessment panels. Alongside the RIBA and Schosa, AHRA pushed for an overhaul of the 'Built Environment' panel, which was subsequently renamed 'Architecture and the Built Environment'. In total, 8 of AHRA's nominations were offered places on Panel 30, providing a broader range of expertise and a stronger voice for architectural humanities. The full membership included:

Alan Penn (University College London)
